Dear Nish… – Detroit Community-Engaged Research Program

Dear Nish…

Dear Nish,

Wow, it’s only been three days, but I can tell that this summer will be a blast! From the moment I stepped on Wayne State, I knew that something bright was in the near future;  I could not have asked for a better start to this internship, All the students here have been so friendly and welcoming, and it’s made my transition from Arizona much easier. When I entered my dorm room for the first time, I had to rethink if I was living in a hotel room, or in fact a dorm. The private restrooms make it easier for everyone! I thought it would be tough waking up early for my first day of work, since I was still on Arizona time (which is three hours behind), but I was so anxious and excited to start that I actually woke up two hours before my alarm clock was supposed to sound.

I feel so official wearing business clothes, and my carpool with McKenzie (the driver) and Meredith (my co-worker) have been awesome. Meredith and I are volunteering for the Neighborhood Services Organization in the Bell Building, and as soon as we entered, we were met with great enthusiasm by the security guard. securedownload3securedownload6

Soon after, we were joyfully greeted by our supervisors, Elizabeth and Sophia. We took a tour of the building and the facilities, and even though it was my second time visit the building, I was awed by how much they offer to the previously homeless residents. All the fellow volunteers/staff have been so welcoming to us, and it seems like we have been there for months!

Our primary goal is to design a rooftop garden for the residents, that will not only impact them but also the local community. We have been researching the methods of rooftop gardening and also contacting local people who have experience in designing and constructing them. I cannot wait until we complete it!securedownload4

Meredith and I have only known each other for three days, but it seems like she’s been my friend for many years. We instantly struck a bond that I’m grateful to have since we will be working together on our goals for the next ten weeks!securedownload9

I just got back from eating delicious deep dish pizza from Pizza Papalis Taverna in Historic Greek Town. I had been to Detroit before, but it had never been so lively before. I felt the typical downtown feel while walking there and it was so great.

I hope to continue forming friendships with people at the NSO, such as the tenants and staff members, but also the fellow interns in this program. I also hope to develop leadership and teamwork skills that will benefit me in the future. I cannot wait to see what that future holds for me here in Detroit!

This is my office:

  1. Although I didn’t get to know you the brief time you were here, I hope everything turns out fine with you and your family. I will keep you all in my prayers and stay strong.
